Preserving Punjab’s heritage by empowering women and strengthening rural communities.Phulkari is more than embroidery. It is a cherished expression of Punjab’s culture, creativity and traditions, passed down through generations of women.Through The Phulkari Artisans of Punjab Cooperative Industrial, women from villages surrounding the HMEL refinery are being trained in the traditional art of Phulkari and encouraged to come together through Self Help Groups.With the support of HMEL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, this effort aims to preserve Punjab’s traditional craftsmanship while creating opportunities for women to learn, practise and carry this heritage forward.

Punjab’s cultural heritage is woven into its traditions, festivals, clothing, music, food and crafts. Among these traditions, Phulkari holds a special place.

The vibrant colours and intricate stitches of Phulkari reflect the creativity, patience and skill of Punjabi women. Traditionally created for weddings, celebrations and special occasions, Phulkari pieces have often been treasured and passed from one generation to another.

Today, preserving this heritage means ensuring that the knowledge and skills behind it continue to be taught and practised.
